Thornton Wilder was born in Winconsin, U.S.A., in 1987 and, after graduating from Yale, spent a year in Rome and as a result wrote his first novel, The Cabala, published in 1926. Next year The Bridge of San Lusis Rey established him as a leading novelist of the day. The Ides of March was published in 1948.
